Measuring rooms for flooring
By EasyQuote Flooring · Updated October 10, 2026 · Original planning guide
A reliable flooring budget starts with a sketch of the spaces that will actually receive flooring. Measure first; add cutting waste afterward.
Start with a labeled sketch
- Draw each room and mark doorways, closets, alcoves and permanent obstructions.
- Measure inside wall to inside wall. Record units next to every dimension and check the measurements a second time.
- Break complicated rooms into non-overlapping rectangles. Give each section a name in the calculator.
- Check with your installer which fixed cabinets or islands should be excluded. Do not assume flooring belongs beneath every built-in.
Four shapes, four clear formulas
| Shape | What to measure | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangle | Length A and width B | A × B |
| L-shape | Outer rectangle A × B; missing corner C × D | A × B − C × D |
| Triangle | Base A; height B perpendicular to base | A × B ÷ 2 |
| Circle | Diameter A across the center | π × (A ÷ 2)² |
An outer 16 × 14 ft rectangle with a 6 × 4 ft missing corner has 224 − 24 = 200 sq ft of floor. The cutout must be smaller than the outer rectangle in both directions. Add the closet separately only if it is outside the area already measured.
Feet and inches are not decimal feet
Divide inches by 12 before adding them to feet. Ten feet six inches is 10 + 6 ÷ 12 = 10.5 ft, not 10.6 ft. A 10 ft 6 in by 12 ft room is 126 sq ft.
For metric measurements, the calculator uses 1 ft = 0.3048 m exactly. A 3 × 4 m room is approximately 129.17 sq ft. Changing a room’s unit converts its dimensions; it does not reinterpret the same numbers.
Keep measured area separate from waste
Do not inflate dimensions and then add another hidden allowance. Enter the measured room, then select a visible cutting allowance. If walls are uneven, document how you measured and have the installation layout checked before ordering.
This area calculator does not create a cutting layout or calculate stairs, sheet-vinyl seams, carpet roll widths or tile patterns. Those require additional layout planning.
Enter your rooms → Then read how waste and whole boxes change the order.
