Underlayment, trim and transitions

A low flooring-only total can hide missing materials. Build the rest of your list by installation system, then price each item with a local supplier.
Underlayment is a compatibility decision
Start with the product’s installation instructions, the subfloor material and any moisture requirements. An attached cushion does not mean every additional layer is allowed or required. A moisture barrier and a cushioning underlayment serve different purposes.
For the Stormy Elm example, the linked DuraLux instructions describe attached underlayment and optional approved residential additions, prohibit additional underlayment in commercial installations, and require a 6-mil polyethylene moisture barrier over concrete. These are product-specific instructions. Do not apply them automatically to another floor.
If the approved material covers 100 sq ft per roll and your required coverage is 250 sq ft, round up to 3 rolls. Enter an area allowance for overlaps or cuts if the instructions call for it. The planner does not silently apply the flooring waste rate to underlayment.
Measure trim in linear feet
Trace only the edges receiving new trim, subtract openings where trim stops and account for existing trim you are keeping. Add a cutting allowance for corners and joins. Divide by the actual stick length, then round up.
For example, 62 ft of planned trim divided by 8 ft per stick requires 8 sticks. Eight feet is an illustrative unit, not a verified supplier product. Long runs, miter cuts and unusable offcuts can require more than this length-only minimum.
Count transitions by opening and profile
A doorway between equal-height floating floors may require a different profile from a change to carpet, tile or a lower floor. Measure each opening and check the purchased length. A single piece may not span a wide opening. Verify installation gaps, track requirements and fasteners.
Tile needs a different materials list
A tile budget may include mortar, grout, a suitable underlayment or uncoupling membrane, edge profiles and sealant. Quantities depend on product coverage instructions, tile size, joint width and substrate condition. Enter these as separate custom lines; the area calculator does not determine structural suitability or mortar coverage.
Allow for the condition of the existing floor
Subfloor preparation, moisture testing, leveling products and repairs may only be known after inspection. Keep them visible as unpriced lines until you have a defensible quantity and quote. The estimate does not include labor, demolition or disposal by default.
